Anyone interested in easy ways to make a positive impact on their communities needs
to lookno further than 12-year-old Danykah: Muck, a Michigan middle-schooler whose
simple learning project is an inspiration to positive thinkers of any age. It all started with her
way to school every school day. Every morning she would greet an old man in her
neighborhood, who she still doesn't know his name, smiling or even simply offering a
friendly word “hello”. And he would always nodand smile back. “It seems to considerably
change the emotional energy around me in the community.”She noticed this in both
directions, “That simple act can both change our entire day with how they greet me.”
Last spring, Muck brought an idea to her teachers. She provided them with a pile of
sticky notes she had filled with brief-sometimes one-word-positive messages. She then asked
the teachers to place the notes on students' desks before they arrived at school the next day.
She also gave pre-filled sticky notes to the lunch staff and to school administrators including
the principal. The idea was to make it easy for teachers, staff and students to regularly
encounter reminders that they matter and are valued. “You are enough just being you,” reads
one favorite note. Muck's idea could be just the thing in an office, an assisted living facility or
even at home for asmall family.
“Low-cost” positive interactions, like a friendly word offered to the postal worker or
coffee shop servant, are shown by psychology researchers to build sympathy and abate
loneliness. Ananonymous note sent into someone's inbox or stuck to their front door is
perhaps the lowest-costconnection there is, with potential benefits beyond our imagination.

One day, gardeners might not just hear the buzz of bees among their flowers, but the
whirr of robots, too. Scientists have managed to turn an unassuming drone (无人机) into a
remote-controlled pollinator (授粉媒介) by attaching horsehairs coated with a special, sticky
gel to its underbelly.
Animal pollinators are needed for the reproduction of 90% of flowering plants and one
third of human food crops. Chief among those are bees — but many bee populations in the
United States have been in steep decline in recent decades. Thus, the decline of bees isn't just
worrisome because it could disrupt ecosystems, but also because it could disrupt agriculture
and economy. People have been trying to come up with replacement techniques, but none of
them are especially effective yet.
Scientists have thought about using drones, but they haven't figured out how to make
free-flying robot insects that can rely on their own power source without being attached to a
wire. “It’s very tough work,” said senior author Eijiro Miyako, a chemist at the National
Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. His particular contribution to the
field involves a gel, one he’d considered a mistake 10 years before and stuck in a storage
cabinet. When it was rediscovered a decade later, it hadn’t dried up or degraded at all. “I was
so surprised because it still had high viscosity,” Miyako said.
The chemist noticed that when dropped, the gel absorbed an impressive amount of dust
from the floor. Miyako realized this material could be very useful for picking up pollen (花粉).
He and his colleagues chose a drone and attached horsehairs to its smooth surface to mimic
a bee’s fuzzy body. They coated those horsehairs in the gel, and then controlled the drones
over lilies, where they would pick up the pollen from one flower and then deposit the pollen
at another one, thus fertilizing it.
The scientists looked at the hairs under a scanning electron microscope and counted up
the pollen grains attached to the surface and found that the drones whose horsehairs had
been coated with the gel had about 10 times more pollen than those that had not been
coated with the gel.
Miyako does not think such drones would replace bees altogether, but could simply help
bees with their pollinating duties. There’s a lot of work to be done before that's a reality,
however. Small drones will need to become more controllable and energy efficient, as well as
smarter, with better GPS and artificial intelligence.

World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train Line
Last Wednesday, five hydrogen-powered trains began to make the 100-kilometer trip
between Cuxhaven and Buxtehude in Germany. The trains make almost no noise and run
without polluting. Germany is planning to replace many of its diesel (柴油) trains with
hydrogen trains.
Currently, most trains run on diesel power. When diesel fuel is burned, it creates carbon
dioxide and other polluting gases. These gases have helped create the climate crisis. That’s
one reason why many countries are trying to find energy choices that pollute less.
Hydrogen is the simplest known element. It’s also very common—74% of the universe
is made of hydrogen atoms. Pure hydrogen is a gas that burns easily. Hydrogen can be. used
to create electricity by combining it with oxygen in a “fuel cell”. The chemical reaction which
takes place creates electricity. A fuel cell is like a battery that never runs down as long as it
has hydrogen. The oxygen comes from the air around the train. The best part is that when a
fuel cell creates electricity, it doesn’t create pollution. The only thing it gives off is water,
which comes out as steam.
There’s a hydrogen station on the line to refuel the trains. But since the trains can go
about 1,000 kilometers before they need more fuel, they only need to fill up once a day. The
trains can go as fast as 140 kph—about the same as the diesel trains they are replacing.
In many places, hydrogen-powered trains are a smart choice for replacing diesel trains.
The city of Frankfurt, Germany has already ordered 27 of the hydrogen-powered trains.
Other countries are also interested. France and Italy have ordered several of the hydrogen
powered trains. Germany will replace up to 3,000 of its diesel trains with hydrogen- powered
trains.
