I know I wasn’t a willing student and I should not have been

so difficult at school, but it was probably

If what I do as a teacher can help turn a child like Graham into such a successful adult, then I know what I’m doing is worthwhile.

1

This is Science and Technology View of our TV station. We are now on the air with a 45-minute regular program to bring you a big invention – cell phones.

Nowadays you can find a cell phone used here and there. Many people consider it one of the greatest inventions last century. Why? Several reasons for it.First of all, it has changed

our way of life and speed the pace of our work. Also, it is a way to have fun and be cool.

Modern cell phones are more than just phones – they are being used as cameras and radios, and to send e-mail or surf the Internet.New functions are being added to the phones.

It’s believed that cell phones in the future will still play an impo

rtant part in people’s life. They will be much more smarter, and prices will be more competitive.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Nowadays, star-worshiping is popular among teenagers, especially many middle school students. Thousands of fans are on fire for the handsome appearances, beautiful songs and perfect acting skills

of their idols, and they imitate whatever stars do, including their clothes, hair style and hobbies. As a result, some of them forget what they should do and even spoil their study.

In my opinion, having idols is not a bad thing. However, we should make it clear who are the real “heroes”. As far as I am concerned, the real heroes are those who are making the most

contributions to our society, such as teachers, doctors and scientists. As young students, we should learn from them. Only in this way can we become useful men and be real popular stars in the future.

Thanks.

3

Western holidays such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and etc. are getting more and more popular in . Some Chinese peopl

e even get crazy on them. But at the same time, people seem to have less enthusiasm for

our traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Moon cake Festival. In fact, most people celebrate western holidays without knowing the meaning behind them. They just go

shopping, hold parties and have fun.

In my opinion, the celebration of western holiday is a good way of learning the western cultures, which helps to promote understanding and communication between Chinese cultures and other cultures. What’s more, the celebration can also make

our life more colorful and interesting. However, we should make great efforts to preserve and enrich our own traditional culture. After all, most of the festivals are passed down from generation to generation.

4

Newspapers have been popular for a long time, but in recent

years more and more people prefer to get news from the Internet.

Newspapers and websites are similar in several ways. For example, they both aim at providing information to the public. Besides that, advertising is an important way for both of them to

make money.

In spite of the above similar

ities, there are a few differences. Websites update their news

freely. As for newspapers, nothing can be changed once published. So websites offer us the latest news faster than newspapers. Furthermore, newspapers have to be paid for while most websites are free. And it is on the websites that we can express ourselves and exchange ideas with others more easily.

In my opinion, websites and newspaper play their own roles in our lives and they are part of our lives.

5

Most of us agree that music should be played. As we know, music can produce a lively and happy atmosphere. Besides, music provides us with relaxation after hard study, which reduces the tiredness. Listening to music also makes us feel happy.

On the other hand, some students have the opposite view.

They don't think they can get the expected results by listening to music, as the break between classes is too short. What's needed during the break is peace instead of the noise produced by the music. What’s worse, in class some students are still

lost in the music they have just heard.

Speaking for myself, I stand on the side of the former. Of course, light music is appreciated.

6

Dear Tom:

In your last e-mail, you showed great interest in our National Stadium —the

Bird’s Nest.

Now I’d like to introduce it to you.

The Bird’s Nest is located on North Fourth Ring Road in , and covers an area of 58,000 square meters, with a seating capacity of about 90 thousand. Its construction was started in December, 2003 and completed in 2007. It looks just like a

bird’s nest made of tree branches. During the Olympic Games, we host the track and field events and soccer matches there. After the Games it has been used for large scale events.

The Bird’s Nest

is thought highly of by officials and experts all over the world.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan gives the thumbs up to its design and thinks that it will be an incredible symbolism in the

history of the global Games.

I hope that my introduction satisfies you.

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming

Changes in the Ways People Spent Their Holidays

The ways people spent their holidays have greatly changed recently. In 2002, 35% of people spent their holidays at home. The number dropped greatly to 10% in 2006.

The paragraph shows that the number of people spending their holiday traveling abroad also increased. Compared with 15% in 2002, the rate in 2006 rose to 25%. Because people now have much more money than before, they can afford to travel abroad, and the rate may continue to rise in the near future.

The paragraph also shows that the number of people going to the seaside remained nearly the same, while the number of people who go camping rose from 10% in 2002 to 30% in 2006. Maybe people become tired of the city and want to be close to nature.

8

When people’s life is getting better and better, more and more people choose to spend their holidays abroad. The year 2008 sees a sharp increase in the number of overseas travelers compared with the year 2001, when the number was already mo

re than doubled of the year 1996. It’s a good thing that Chinese tourism is developing very fast. And yet, reports about people’s bad manners flood in. Some are even asked if all Chinese

spit and litter everywhere. The poor behavior has done great

harm to the image of China, which is really shameful.

has long been regarded as a country with good manners. Everybody should keep some do’s and don’ts in their mind to guide their behavior in public, home and abroad. Win respect for

yourself and our country!

9

Teachers and fellow students,

As we all know, a severe tsunami broke out in the Indian Ocean this time. It’s reported that it hit about 10 countries, causing more than 200,000 deaths and leaving millions of people homeless. Countless houses and schools have been destroyed.

Just imagine how the students there need help! Schools should be rebuilt so that they can return to classes soon. Here the

Student Union calls on everyone to do something for them. We’ll have a voluntary contribution this week. Let’s give away our pocket money. Besides, we’ll organize a bring-and-buy sale Saturday morning. Please bring your books, toys, CDs or something else here to sell. All the money to be collected will be sent to the disaster areas.

That’s all. Thank you.

10

Boys and girls,

We high school students do have some growing pains, but we can get rid of them correctly and wisely.

First, some of us are upset about their body styles and looks.

It’s unnecessary and it’s not important at all. We needn’t care

about it. It is one’s inner beauty that matters. Second, we sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers, parents and classmates. Facing this, we can find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, trying to remove the misunderstanding. Some of us have fewer friends. I think being open-minded and friendly will do you good. Third, we may fall behind others, which makes us stressed. Actually we can encourage ourselves to work efficiently, full of determination. Last, some of us don’t have much pocket money, so they feel unhappy.

Isn’t it strange? So long as we have some, that’s enough. And we can learn to spend money!

That’s all. Thank you.

11 Dear Tom,

It is nice to receive your email. Now I’d like to tell you somethi

ng about the .

Palace Museum is also called the Forbidden City. It took 200,000 workers more than 14 years to build it. The Forbidden

City was finished in 1420. As the largest museum in the world, the holds cultural treasures from the past 5,000 years of Chinese history. The City’s palaces have 9,99 rooms altogether.

Chinese people traditionally have thought of nine as a lucky number. Students from all over can now visit it in groups free of charge every Tuesday. The museum is under reconstruction.

I hope you can come to and take a look at this museum with your own eyes.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Ming

I'm Wang Shan, a girl of sixteen, presently attending Beijing Yangguang Middle. I like music, especially classical music. I’m

also interested in photography because it allows me to record

the beautiful moments in my life. Though my hobbies, I’ve made many friends. In fact, I like meeting new people and enjoy talking with them. Believing we all need help from each other, I appreciate friends’ help, and I am wiling to help anyone in ne

ed. I love life; I love Mother Nature; and I love peace. I hate any form of violence. I would like to join the Peace and Friendship Summer Camp since it would be a great opportunity to make friends with young people from different countries and learn about their cultures.

I will never forget my first teacher, Miss Emily, who has influenced me a lot on my life and career. She was a small, birdlike

woman, her appearance giving the impression of a nervous person. I soon learnt, however, that her true character was calm, warm and kind. She was strict with us as well as in her work and often worked late in her office. I remember on one occasion when nearly everyone in my class has come down with

the flu, Emily managed to keep the class running smoothly without seeming stressed in the least. She treated us as if we had been her own children. Being kind and helpful, she always enjoys helping others out. If she sensed that something had gone wrong, she would call you into her office and encourage you to talk. Not only was she a good listener, but the advice she

offered was always sound as well. I lost contact with Emily after her retirement, but I’ll always remember her as the “guiding light” in my life, the woman, who set us a good example in life and is respected by us all, enabled me to be successful as I

am today. 14

Dear Mr. Smith, I feel excited to learn from the web that volunteers are needed for English Summer Camp for Kids. I am longing for such a job because I love language learning and working with kids as well. Let me introduce myself. My name is Li Hua––17 years old, a bright and cheerful boy in . My classmates have elected me to be class monitor as I get on well with others

and have good communication skills. Right now I am working

as the head of the English Club in our school. Actually I have

some experience in language camps. Last summer I stayed at an English summer camp in . My English is good enough to

deal with such a job. I do wish you could accept me. I can promise you the following three qualities: good patience, high efficiency and strong sense of responsibility. I’m looking forward to hearing from you! With best wishes.

Yours,

Li Hua

My perfect school

My perfect school would be in the centre of the city. The school would have a big playground so that students could play ball games there. There would also be computers in all the class

rooms. Another thing it would have is a language lab where we could have our English classes. Students would study all the school subjects such as Chinese, math, English, physics and chemistry. There would also be some new optional subjects for students to choose, for example, literary appreciation, astronomy, biochemistry, etc. The teachers there would be mild and kind.

As well as the subjects on the timetable, there would be many after-school interest groups, such as chess, choir, photography and sports. There would be regular trips to places like museums

and art galleries too.

In conclusion, I think my school would have a good variety of

activities — something for everyone.

I haven’t seen Mr Jenkins since I left school but I often think about him.

I wasn’t good at most school subjects. I was a bit lazy and now I wish I’d done more work, especially in maths.

He used to explain things with lots of practical examples and simplified things that seemed

difficult.

I know I wasn’t a willing student and I should not have been so difficult at school, but it was

probably because I lacked confidence in myself.

He was very bright and should have done much better in all his other subjects.

My wife often wished that I had chosen a job with less stress but I love what I do.

If what I do as a teacher can help turn a child like Graham into such a successful adult, then I know what I’m doing is worthwhile.

The thing about being a teacher is that you have access to children’s minds when they are

open and eager to learn.

If someone like me had failed to get into university through the college exam, he would have had no chance of getting a degree.

Because of my new qualification, I’m getting promoted at work.

When my manager told me that I would be laid off, my mind went blank and my heart swelled with anger.

Aside from emailing, it’s fun to see and talk to my grandchildren in the on the i-Cam.

I decided to give myself a second chance by studying a degree on weekends while keeping a secure full-time job. Frankly speaking, the last four years have been hard work, but it’s been worth it!

It is not surprising that people wanted to believe these ancient views as they had been put forward by the great philosopher Aristotle.

People feel that someone important and respected says that something is right, then it must be so.

Between now and the 21st century, citizens of the world’s richest and most advanced nations will find it more and more difficult to keep up with the demand for change.

Without doubt, the number of jobs in information technology will multiply.

Companies will require people who are flexible and can work on their own.

I asked her how she had achieved success and she told me that being curious, working hard, and believing in what was true made her the success she is today.

I discovered then that as long as I am committed and never give up I will be able to produce

high quality reports.

While your IQ tells you how intelligent you are, your EQ tells you how well you use your intelligence.

People are often mistaken in thinking that those with high IQs always have high EQs as well.

It is generally believed that people with high EQs are open to new ideas and have positive attitudes towards life.

They are also less likely to be troubled by problems. On the other hand, there is little doubt

that people with low EQs often have problems getting on with other people and dealing with

difficult situation; thus they have a harder time surviving in life.

They may have been separated from the other students and couldn’t hear anyone when the thunder started.

and to send e-mail or surf the Internet.New functions are being added to the phones.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Nowadays, star-worshiping is popular among teenagers, especially many middle school students. Thousands of fans are on fire for the handsome appearances, beautiful songs and perfect acting skills of their idols, and they imitate whatever stars do, including their clothes, hair style and hobbies. As a result, some of them forget what they should do and even spoil their study.

In my opinion, having idols is not a bad thing. However, we should make it clear who are the

real “heroes”. As far as I am concerned, the real heroes are those who are making the most

contributions to our society, such as teachers, doctors and scientists. As young students, we

should learn from them. Only in this way can we become useful men and be real popular stars in the future.

Thanks.

3

Western holidays such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and etc. are getting more and more popular in . Some Chinese people even get crazy on them. But at the same time, people seem to have less enthusiasm for our traditional festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Moon cake Festival. In fact, most people celebrate western holidays without knowing the meaning behind them. They just go shopping, hold parties and have fun.

In my opinion, the celebration of western holiday is a good way of learning the western cultures, which helps to promote understanding and communication between Chinese cultures and other cultures. What’s more, the celebration can also make our life more colorful and interesting. However, we should make great efforts to preserve and enrich our own traditional culture. After all, most of the festivals are passed down from generation to generation.

4

Newspapers have been popular for a long time, but in recent years more and more people prefer to get news from the Internet.

Newspapers and websites are similar in several ways. For example, they both aim at providi

ng information to the public. Besides that, advertising is an important way for both of them to

make money.

In spite of the above similarities, there are a few differences. Websites update their news freely. As for newspapers, nothing can be changed once published. So websites offer us the latest news faster than newspapers. Furthermore, newspapers have to be paid for while most websites are free. And it is on

the websites that we can express ourselves and exchange ideas with others more easily.

In my opinion, websites and newspaper play their own roles in our lives and they are part of

our lives.

What’s worse, in class some students are still lost in the music they have just heard.

Speaking for myself, I stand on the side of the former. Of course, light music is appreciated.

It looks just like a bird’s nest made of tree branches. During the Olympic Games, we host the track and field events and soccer matches there. After the Games it has been used for large scale events.

The Bird’s Nest

is thought highly of by officials and experts all over the world. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan gives the thumbs up to its design and thinks that it will be an incredible symbolism in the h

istory of the global Games.

I hope that my introduction satisfies you.

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming

Changes in the Ways People Spent Their Holidays

The ways people spent their holidays have greatly changed recently. In 2002, 35% of people

spent their holidays at home. The number dropped greatly to 10% in 2006.

The paragraph shows that the number of people spending their holiday traveling abroad also

increased. Compared with 15% in 2002, the rate in 2006 rose to 25%. Because people now

have much more money than before, they can afford to travel abroad, and the rate may continue to rise in the near future.

The paragraph also shows that the number of people going to the seaside remained nearly the same, while the number of people who go camping rose from 10% in 2002 to 30% in 2006. Maybe people become tired of the city and want to be close to nature.

8

When people’s life is getting better and better, more and more people choose to spend their

holidays abroad. The year 2008 sees a sharp increase in the number of overseas travelers compared with the year 2001, when the number was already more than doubled of the year 1996. It’s a good thing that Chinese tourism is developing very fast. And yet, reports about people’s bad manners flood in. Some are even asked if all Chinese spit and litter everywhere. The poor behavior has done great harm to the image of China, which is really shameful.

has long been regarded as a country with good manners. Everybody should keep some do’s and don’ts in their mind to guide their behavior in public, home and abroad. Win respect for yourself and our country!

9

Teachers and fellow students,

As we all know, a severe tsunami broke out in the Indian Ocean this time. It’s reported that it

hit about 10 countries, causing more than 200,000 deaths and leaving millions of people homeless. Countless houses and schools have been destroyed. Just imagine how the students there need help! Schools should be rebuilt so that they can return to classes soon. Here the Student Union calls on everyone to do something for them.

We needn’t care about it. It is one’s inner beauty that matters. Second, we sometimes seem to be misunderstood by our teachers, parents and classmates. Facing this, we

can find a proper time to have a heart-to-heart talk with them, trying to remove the misunderstanding. So long as we

have some, that’s enough. And we can learn to spend money!

That’s all. Thank you.

11 Dear Tom,

It is nice to receive your email. Now I’d like to tell you something about the .

Palace Museum is also called the Forbidden City. It took 200,000 workers more than 14 years to build it. The Forbidden City was finished in 1420. As the largest museum in the world, the holds cultural treasures from the past 5,000 years of Chinese history. The City’s palaces

have 9,99 rooms altogether.

I like music,

especially classical music. I’m also interested in photography because it allows me to record

the beautiful moments in my life. Though my hobbies, I’ve made many friends. In fact, I like

meeting new people and enjoy talking with them. Believing we all need help from each other, I appreciate friends’ help, and I am wiling to help anyone in need. I love life; I love Mother Nature; and I love peace. I hate any form of violence. I would like to join the Peace and Friendship Summer Camp since it would be a great opportunity to make friends with young people from different countries and learn about their cultures.

13

I will never forget my first teacher, Miss Emily, who has influenced me a lot on my life and career. She was a small, birdlike woman, her appearance giving the impression of a nervous person. I soon learnt, however, that her true character was calm, warm and kind. She was strict with us as well as in her work and often worked late in her office. I remember on one occasion when nearly everyone in my class has come down with the flu, Emily managed to keep the class running smoothly without seeming stressed in the least. She treated us as if we had

been her own children. Being kind and helpful, she always enjoys helping others out. If she sensed that something had gone wrong, she would call you into her office and encourage you

to talk. Not only was she a good listener, but the advice she offered was always sound as well. I lost contact with Emily after her retirement, but I’ll always remember her as the “guiding

light” in my life, the woman, who set us a good example in life and is respected by us all, enabled me to be successful as I am today. 14

Dear Mr. Smith, I feel excited to learn from the web that volunteers are needed for English

Summer Camp for Kids. I am longing for such a job because I love language learning and working with kids as well. Let me introduce myself. My name is Li Hua––17 years old, a bright and cheerful boy in . My classmates have elected me to be class monitor as I get on well with others and have good communication skills. Right now I am working as the head of the English Club in our school. Actually I have some experience in language camps. Last summer I stayed at an English summer camp in . My English is good enough to deal with such a job. I do wish you could accept me. I can promise you the following three qualities: good patience, high efficiency and strong sense of responsibility. I’m looking forward to hearing from you! With best wishes. Yours,
