Campus Reading Festival

参考答案:
Campus Reading Festival
In May, our school held Campus Reading Festival to encourage students to read
Nearly five hundred students went to the festival. Many of them took books from home
and exchanged them with other students. Almost everyone seemed to have got the books they
liked. Those who were interested in literature attended the lecture on famous western works.
They also had a heated discussion after the lecture. The Chinese poetry reading
competition attracted many students as well. All the participants performed so well that the
judges found it very hard to select the winner.
Reading lights up our life. As one student put it, "Campus Reading Festival broadened our
knowledge and aroused our interest in reading more books."
三、 阅读理解
20. Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on
daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is
different in style(风格). But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the
same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey
shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of “rubbish talk”. The contents on his
show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk
show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer
show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of
other people’s lives.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the
opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different
quality(质量) of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your
work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured
into society. Jerry ends every show with a “final word”. He makes a small speech about
the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn
something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main viewers are
middleclass Americans. Most of these people have the time, money, and ability to deal
with life’s tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection
with the young adults of society. These are 18-to-21-year-olds whose main troubles in
life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some
value and lessons to be learned through the show’s exploitation.
67. Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey
are _____.
A. more interesting. B. unusually popular. C. more detailed. D. more formal.
68. Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who
watch the shows____.
A. remain interested in them. B. are ready to face up to them.
C. remain cold to them. D. are willing to get away from them.
69. Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A. A new type of robot. B. Nation hatred(憎恨).
C. Family income planning. D. Street accident.
70. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows_____.
A. have become the only ones of its kind.
B. exploit the weaknesses in human nature.
C. appear at different times of the day.
D. attract different people.

21. We often hear people say, “I have a good memory for things like that” or “I can
remember names”. But do you know memory is the single most important thing and it
has played a very important part?
For early men, there were dangerous all around them—bad weather, wild animals.
The key to keep on living lay in man’s ability to remember these dangers and the ways
he had dealt with them in the past. In order for memories to be stored, the human brain
became more complex. And as man learned how to deal with them, he became civilized
(文明). Surprisingly, scientists today understand little about memory and how it works.
They have not yet found a way to open up the brain and observe its function without
destroying it. Perhaps there are two types of memory: short-term and long-term. Short-term refers to those facts that stay with us for a few seconds to a few hours. For
instance, when you stay at a hotel, you remember the room number and forget as soon
as you leave. Long-term memory, on the other hand, means you remember things for a
long period of time. If you spend your honeymoon in a particular hotel, it’s likely that
you’ll remember your stay quite clearly.
Scientists also believe that a short-term memory can become a long-term memory
through consolidation (巩固). A lot of chemical and physical changes take place in the
part of the brain. Although the human brain weighs three pounds, it contains 30 billion
nerve cells (神经细胞) acting like a computer. When those changes strengthen the links
(联系) in certain nerve cells, a thought becomes part of the long-term memory.
68. According to the author, without the development of man’s memory there would
be .
A. no modern world B. no recorded history
C. no animals D. no dangers
69. Scientists’ knowledge about the function of brain is .
A. interesting B. not enough
C. great D. encouraging
70. Short-term memory can change into long-term memory on condition that .
A. memory is good B. it acts like a computer
C. people do more exercise D. the links in nerve cells are strengthened by certain
changes
71. So far the great discovery scientists have made about the function of brain is .
A. the weight of brain B. two types of memory
C. 30 billion nerve cells D. chemical and physical changes
