At 4:53 p.m. on January 12, United Nations aid worker Jens ristensen was at his desk reading

documents on the third floor of the Christopher Hotel, which served as UN headquarters in Port-au-Prince,

when he felt a tremor. Four seconds later, the earthquake hit.

“In a split second, I considered whether to run for the door or hide under my desk,” says ristensen,

48. “The door was closed, and I thought that maybe it was too far and I would be caught under falling

debris, so I hid under the table.” A bookshelf topped onto his desk, protecting him from being crushed by

rubble and trapping him in a tiny pocket. “I was confined as if in a small coffin,” he says. It was so dark,

and it didn’t matter if his eyes were open or closed. He used the light from his mobile phone to see around

him. He found, among other items, a jar of instant coffee. “I had no food or water, only the coffee to suck on

if I needed it.”

At about 6:30 a.m. on January 17, an oil leak silenced the building’s generators, and ristensen was

able to hear muffled voices above where he was buried. “I thought, I was too tired to bang and shout. But

then I realized, I had to take every chance. This could be one.” So he called out. Six hours later, ristensen

saw his rescuers’ faces. “It was so amazing. I felt I had received a second birthday,” he recalls.

Dehydration and pains but with only a bruise and a scratch, ristensen took three days to recover. The

UN lost more than 90 people in Haiti. But ristensen says that the outpouring of love helps heal the pain

Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests

that violence not only leaves longterm scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing

changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.

Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres,

says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.

Telomeres are special DNA sequences which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They

get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.

Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological

stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person.

In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children’s telomeres

shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking

whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner;

physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres—in cells

obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeks—at ages 5 and 10.

Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that

pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart

attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.

Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen.

Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he

says.

The study confirms a smallbutgrowing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity

imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at

Harvard Medical School.

(C)66. The new study found that ________.

A. hardship has a longterm effect on a child’s mind

B. violence leaves scars on a child’s mind

C. violence can speed up a child’s aging

D. hardship can change a child’s aging

【解析】细节理解题。根据文章第一段中的“In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves

long-term scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven

to ten years of premature aging.”,可知,C是正确答案。

(B)67. According to the text, telomeres ________.

A. are at the ends of people’s chromosomes

B. can help prevent DNA from separating

C. can make a cell die quickly

D. become shorter before they die

【解析】细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“Telomeres are special DNA sequences which prevent the

DNA in chromosomes from separating.”可知,端粒是DNA 的序列,可以阻止染色体中的DNA 分裂。根

据第二段中“...by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres,”可知A项错

误; 根据第三段中“They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.”

可知C、D项错误。

(D)68. All of the following things can shorten telomeres ECEPT ________.

A. maltreatment B. cell division

C. smoking D. doing exercise

【解析】细节理解题。根据文章第四段中的“Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres,

including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking

care of a chronically ill person.”以及倒数第二段“Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three

things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says.”可以推知,做运动不能使端粒变短反而是变长。

(D)69. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the text?

A. Violence can cause quick cell division in children’s body.

B. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres from their legs in the study.

C. Being treated badly will make a child’s telomeres shorten faster.

D. Children who have shorter telomeres may have a heart attack earlier.

【解析】推理判断题。根据文章第五段最后一句“in cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their

cheeks—at ages 5 and 10”可以推知B是错误项;由第六段“Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to

two or more types of violence”可知C项错误;A项文中未提及。由第六段“the study suggests, these kids

could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years

earlier than their peers”可知D项正确。

(A)70. What is the best title for the text?

A. Violence Aging Children’s DNA

B. Children’s Changing DNA Patterns

C. Violence and Telomeres

D. The Function of Telomeres

【解析】主旨大意题。 根据全文的内容可知,文章描述了主要说明了暴力会加速DNA中端粒的变短

而让孩子们提前衰老,而A 项能很好地概括文章的主旨。

The behaviour of ants has long fascinated scientists. And why not? These insects have the strength to

carry food up to seven times their own body weight, and set up amazingly complex colonies. In recent years,

scientists also have been paying greater attention to the way in which a colony of ants can solve complex

problems.

Each insect in a colony seemed to have its own agenda, and yet the group as a whole appeared to be

highly organized. This was most apparent in the way in which ants travel to and from a food source. Ants

form and maintain a line to their food source by laying a trail of pheromone, a chemical to which other

members of the same species are very sensitive. They deposit a certain amount of pheromone while walking,

and each ant prefers to follow a direction where a lot of pheromone can be found. This enables the ant

colony to quickly find the shortest route.

The social behaviour of ants is among the most complex in the insect world. They communicate by

touch and smell, constantly touching each other to pass on their nest odour. There are also some fairly

aggressive tendencies exhibited by many ants. For example, ants have the ability to take over the nest of

other ant species. The queen will attack and kill the queen of other species, and then cover herself with the

odour of the other queen so she will be accepted by the colony residents.

All ants have amazing design features. They have two sets of jaws—the outer pair is used for carrying

objects and for digging, while the inner pair is used for chewing. Some ants can lift food items that are up to

seven times as heavy as themselves. They control the population numbers of many other species. Ants can

eat animals, plants, and even the seeds of many plants.

Actually, according to what scientists have investigated, ant’s highly complex social structure, life cycle,

strength, are all said to be the result of evolution.

Directions Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the

passage.

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose.

Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself fascinated with the

notes in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.

In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and

effort he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond.

During the next year and onemonth the two grew to know each other through the mail. A Romance

was budding. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t

matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting—7:00 p.m. at Grand Central Station

in New York.

“You’ll recognize me, ” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.” So at 7:00 he was

in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.

A young girl in a green suit was coming toward him, her figure was long and slim and her eyes were

blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis

Maynell—a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he split in two, so

keen was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly

companioned him and upheld his own.

He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, “I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I

am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?”

The woman smiled, “I don’t know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young lady in

the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I

should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of

test!”

It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to

the unattractive.

My Favorite Book

Reading books not only broadens our horizon, but also enriches our minds. Some books are to be

overlooked, others are to be tasted, and some few to be chewed, digested all life long. So far, I have read

numerous books, such as magazines, novels, story books and so on. Yet one of the books that I like best is

My Life Story.

It was created in 1902 by an American writer—Helen eller, a blind, deaf and dumb person. In the book,

she wrote that she had not been able to see, hear or speak since the age of one year and seven months, which

made her desperately sad. When she was seven years old, she knew Miss Sullivan, her private tutor. Helen

was getting happier every day. Then, Miss Sullivan helped her learn how to write English words. At first,

Miss Sullivan wrote some words on Helen's hands with her own fingers again and again. Helen tried as

much as possible to remember words and her efforts paid off. After that, she wrote and published many

famous works, among which is My Life Story. My Life Story described her hard struggle to become an

outstanding writer and educationist across the world.

It shows us a universal truth Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it! This is why I like it best.

Conversation 1

M Now Mrs Jones, have you been following the diet sheet I gave you?

W Well, most of the time I have. But I do get really hungry late in the evening sometimes, and I just

have to have an extra snack before bedtime.

M Late night snacks, huh? And have you been exercising properly?

W Well, I wanted to, but the weather's been

M Mrs Jones, you're at least 40 kilos overweight. You must follow the diet sheet exactly every day. And

you must try to exercise a little bit every day.

Conversation 2

W Good morning.

M Good morning. I'd like to join the school volunteer project.

W What do you like doing?

M I love writing stories. I can tell them stories. I'm sure children will love my stories and me.

W I agree with you. Can you tell me your name, your class and telephone number?

M Oh, sorry. I nearly forgot. I'm Jim Green and in Class 306. My telephone number is 5.

W O, I'll call you when it is ready.

M Thanks a lot.

Conversation 3

W Hey. Today's April 22nd.

Uh...yeah. Happy birthday!

W No. It's not my birthday. It's Earth Day. It's a special day for everyone to think about what they can

do to help protect the earth's environment.

M Huh. So, what are you going to do to help the environment? Plant a tree?

W I decided I'm going to start taking shorter showers to save water. And this morning I bought a bus

pass, so I can start taking the bus to work instead of driving my car.

M Great. I think I'll join you. So, where can I get a bus pass?

W Just go over to the transportation office.

Conversation 4

W I enjoy going through second-hand bookstores. Did you see this old book of children's stories?

M Some of these books aren't so old. This novel was published only 6 years ago. It costs 75 cents.

W Hey, look at this. Look at the signature. It's dated 1893. Maybe it's worth something.

M Everything on that shelf is worth 50 cents.

W But if this is the signature of someone who was well-known, it might bring a lot more. The name

looks like Harold Dodson, maybe. I'm going to buy this book and see if I can find a name like that in the

library.

M Good luck. Your book of plays may make you rich. But I'll bet my 75-cent novel is a better buy.

Conversation 5

W Hi. Haven't seen you for ages. Have you just returned from Australia?

M Yes, from Brisbane.

W How long were you there?

M Nearly two months.

W You like Brisbane?

M Oh, yes. The city is beautiful, green and clean, like a big garden. People there are friendly.

W Mm! What's the weather like there?

M Well, it's pretty hot during December and January and cold during June and July. But basically, the

weather is nice. It's really a good place!

W So the seasons are all upside down for you over there! People can eat Christmas dinner in hot

sunshine.

M That's right! The best time to visit is during September and December. You'll find a lot of

Australians go to the beach on Christmas Day for a barbecue!

Conversation 6

W Well George, what do you plan to do this summer?

M I'm going to teach English to some immigrants in the university's community service programme.

W Sounds interesting. Don't you need to speak a foreign language for a job like that?

M No. You just have to present the language and give the students a chance to practice speaking. My

students won't need to read and write English, at least not now. They are more interested in the spoken

language.

W You sound pretty knowledgeable about that. How come you know so much?

M I took a course in Teaching English as a Second Language last year, when I was in China. I think I

would like to be an ESL teacher after I graduate.

For Canadians, backpacking Europe is a special ceremony signifying a new life stage. Unlike package

tours, backpacking is a struggle, full of discovery and chance connections. It is about focusing on something

different from our own lives and losing ourselves in a new world, if only for a moment.

Well, that's what backpacking Europe is supposed to do. That’s what it used to do before modern

communications, social media, and commercial hostelling (旅社). Older Canadians would not recognize the

Europe that they backpacked in the 1960s, 1970s and even the 1980s. Far from a rough adventure into

foreign cultures, the European experience has been shattered in part by today's technology.

A few years ago, I took my then 60-year-old father on a backpacking trip across part of Europe and

Turkey. As he is an experienced traveler and someone who possesses a strong sense of adventure, I decided

that we'd travel on a budget, staying in hostel dorms. For him, backpacking through Europe in 1969 was

about independence and struggle. But two things surprised him at the end of our journey. First was how

technology-based backpacking had become Young people were so directly connected to home that they

were hardly away in any meaningful sense. Second, the lack of connections we made with locals. Instead of

making us feel closer to a place, he found commercial hostelling actually made us more alienated (疏远的).

But there was some room for hope. While technology takes our attention away from the beauty and

history before us, there were also ways in which it helped us to connect with our surroundings. Websites

like Airbnb have made it easier to stay with enthusiastic locals. Couch Surfing helps organize meet-ups

between locals and travelers. The online marketplace Dopios offers a chance to meet locals through

enjoyable experiences like a personalized city tour.

Backpacking can never be the way it was for our parents’ generation. But doing a little study of

history and culture before leaving, and bravely getting rid of any electronic devices while traveling, will

help give young travelers a taste of the glory days.

24. The underlined word “shattered” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ________.

A. broadened B. relived C. ruined D. acquired

25. After the recent backpacking trip in Europe, the author’s father finds ________.

A. backpackers connect less with locals than before

B. young people dislike getting in touch with their family

C. a hostel is a nice place for travelers to meet each other

D. backpacking in Europe becomes more difficult than before

26 What’s the author’s attitude towards technology?

A. Negative. B. Objective. C. Uncertain. D. Uninterested.

27. The text mainly discusses the relationship between ________.

A. adventures and cultures B. technology and traveling

C. young people and their family D. Canadian travelers and Europeans

Think about the last time you felt afraid. Was it a fear of height? Did you oversleep on a weekday and

fear you’d get into trouble at the office? In any case, you know what it feels like to feel fear.

But one woman doesn’t The woman, code-named “UM”, gave her first-ever interview after years of

being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to

protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.

UM can’t tell you what fear is because she’s never experienced it. “I wonder what it’s like to actually

be afraid of something,” she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wieth disease, which is

characterized by a hoarse(粗哑的)voice, small bumps around the eyes, and calcium deposits(钙沉积的)in

the brain.

In the case of UM,the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response

to fear. In the interview, UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint,

“I was walking to the store, and I saw a man on a park bench. He said. “Come here, please,” so I went over

to him. He grabbed me by the shirt, put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him,

“Go ahead and cut me,” I wasn’t afraid at all. And for some reason,he let me go.”

Doctors who have been studying UM’s condition for years have been trying different things that could

strike fear into her. They finally figured something out—increasing UM’s carbon dioxide levels.Extra

carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals. Increasing

UM’s carbon dioxide levels did manage to give her a fright.

28. The text starts by_______.

A. challenging the reader

B. solving daily problems

C. listing situations

D. giving explanations

29. Why is the woman with Urbach-Wieth disease given a code name?

A. To tell her case from other patients

B. To respect her privacy

C. To meet the researchers’ demands

D. To ensure her safety

30. From UM’s case,we can know that Urbach-Wieth disease may________.

A. stop the brain from functioning normally

B. lead to a decrease in calcium deposits

C. stop the brain from responding quickly

D. lead to an increase in carbon dioxide

31. What will probably happen to UM from the last paragraph?

A. Dying of the Urbach-Wieth disease.

B. Getting the sense of panic.

C. Experiencing another danger.

D. Speaking with a hoarse voice.

D

With around 100 students scheduled to be in that 900 am Monday morning lecture, it is no surprise

that almost 20 people actually make it to the class and only 10 of them are still awake after the first 15

minutes; it is not even a surprise that most of them are still in their pajama’s(睡衣). Obviously, students are

terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule.

All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting systems, this governs the sleep/wake

cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred

sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later

in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the “night owl” schedule of sleep.

This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to

stay up much past midnight. Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research

suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings

have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as “night owls” and only 10 percent can be

classified as “early birds” ------ the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for

all students, for the ones who are true night owls, this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their

lectures which unfortunately fall before midday.

32. What does the author stress in Paragraph 1 ?

A. Many students are absent from class.

B. Students are very tired on Monday mornings.

C. Students do not adjust their sleep patterns well.

D. Students are not well prepared for class on Mondays.

33. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2?

A . Most students prefer to get up late in the morning.

B. Students don’t sleep well because of alerting systems.

C .One’s body clock governs the sleep/wake cycle independently.

D. Adolescents’ delayed sleep/wake cycle isn’t the preferred pattern.

34. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “classified”?

A. Criticized B. Grouped C. Organized D. Named

35. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. Functions of the body clock.

B. The “night owl” phenomenon.

C. Human beings’ sleep behaviour.

D. The school schedule of “early birds”.

Today it is common to see people who walk about with colored wires hanging from their ears wherever

they go. They move about in their personal bubbles, sometimes unaware of what’s happening around them.

36 . Outside life is shut out. So are you one of “them”?

For me, walking around in my own personal bubble is perfect. 37 What’s even better,

wearing earphones seems to give a signal to people which says “I’m not available for chatting at the

moment!”

Suppose you’re at work and about to make an incredible breakthrough, but a colleague suddenly turns

up. At this precise moment, the slightest disturbance would break your concentration. 38

Once again, those wires hanging from your ears would be sure to give that “Go away!” signal.

39 It’s probably part of the growing up stage when they just want to ignore their

whole family. While their mothers give them lectures about why they should do their homework, they can

just turn up the volume(声音) on their MP3 player, smile, and say “Yes, Mum.” Problem solved.

Pretty soon, not only will we have pretty colored wires hanging from our ears—but also our brains will

be directly plugged into some new high-tech instrument. We’ll be in a virtual(虚拟) world, communicating

with everyone else, or choosing not to, as we like. In this world, we will all be permanently plugged in. 40

And they are changing our social habits along the way.

In the end, there is a thin line between using technology as a tool for making life better and being a

slave to it! It’s so strange—suddenly, I don’t feel like wearing my earphones any more!

A. Listening to music through earphones is the perfect way to ignore such interruptions.

B. I also have wires hanging from my ears.

C. They walk around in their own spaces, with their personal “digital noise reduction systems.”

D. I don’t have to deal with the noise from the environment.

E. After all, I am listening to my favorite music and would rather not be disturbed.

F. Our instruments are changing quickly.

G. In the home situation, teenagers love these wires.

One year ago, I had a special English lesson hold at the railway station. It was quite different from the

regular English classes we were familiar to, for we had no textbooks, no blackboard and no fixed seats.

Gathered at the entrance of the station, we were told to collect as much English words and sentence as

possible there. Curious and excited, we walked around the station and looked everywhere, search for any

information in English. Whenever an English word comes into sight, the class would burst into the cheers

its meaning with ease.

作文

Dear Bob,

Last week I did a survey among the students in my class on what university they want to choose. Now

I’m writing to tell you the results.

Twenty-five percent of my classmates want to choose universities in our province. They say they are

more likely to be admitted if they apply to these universities. And they needn’t change their lifestyle too

much. Seventy percent of them would like to choose universities in other provinces. Being away from home,

they can become more independent and there are more universities for them to choose from. The rest five

percent of my classmates plan to choose foreign universities. One reason why they want to go abroad is that

they can learn more about different cultures. Besides, it will be a great help to their foreign language study.

I was never very neat, while my roommate ate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its

place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签 ) everything. I always looked for

everything. Over time, ate got nearer and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would

lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. ate came into the room. ,Soon, I heard her screaming, "Take your shoes

away! Why under my bed!" Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling.

She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone

call. ate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill.

When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬 ) under her covers, sobbing.

Obviously, that was something she should not go through phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of

even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn't noticed ate had sat up.

WHENEVER you are traveling and have the good fortune to arrive at your destination in one piece, I

think that you have to tell people your trip was fine.

I had a fine trip last week.

I went an hour north to a speaking engagement(约会). Fifteen minutes out of town my vehicle began to

shake. The engine light began flashing wildly. Fortunately, I have several friends who lived not far away

from the next exit. I called one and asked if I could borrow her vehicle for the afternoon.

I went straight to my friend’s place and left my vehicle behind, now shaking like a mechanical bull,

then headed back. I was behind schedule, which was why I may have broken the speed limit passing a

motorcycle.

Once I had slowly driven through several miles of construction, traffic began to sail. Until we came to

the trucks with flashing lights blocking traffic. Workers were removing a deer that was no longer with us.

And a second. And a third.

After a brief moment of silence for the deer, traffic got back up to speed. Then dark and ominous(不祥

的) clouds came. They were the kind of clouds that make tornadoes.

Rain fell heavily. Traffic slowed right down and came to a complete stop.

I was thinking how to word my apology for being late when the hail(冰雹) began. It was so dark I

could barely see. Thank goodness for the lightning. It was killer hail, the kind that blows out windshields. I

couldn’t decide whether to shield my eyes or look to see what was happening around me.

Open, eyes! No, close! Open! Close! Open! Close!

The hail ended, the windshield was still there, and the traffic started again. The cloud came back and

dumped all five lakes on us. Stopped again.

Maybe whoever was introducing me could do a song and dance.

Waiting for the second rain to pass, I programed my destination into Google maps. As they closed the

flooded highway behind us, I took my exit and headed to my destination.

I arrived at my destination late, wide-eyed and in a mess, but in one piece.

“How was your trip?”

“Fine, thank you. Just fine.

C. the author was very scared. D. the author’s windshield was broken.

B. Because it was raining so heavily that she was very scared.

C. Because it was so dark and she could barely see.

D. Because there were deer dead in front of his car and she couldn’t believe her eyes.

35. What is the best title for the passage?

A. An exciting engagement B. Three poor deer

What would Barbie look if she were average?

According to US artist Nickolay Lamm, she would be brunette(深褐色头发的白人女子) with a

rounded face and a much thicker waist.

Frustrated with the unrealistic beauty standards of Barbie and her friends, Lamm took data from the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about an average 19-year-old American woman, who is about

163cm tall, with a 84-cm waist. With those measurements, Lamm created a doll.

The doll’s name is Lammily, and her tagline is “Average is beautiful”.

“I think a realistic-size doll is important because when I look at current dolls on the market, they all

look like supermodels,” the artist told AFP. “I just had the impression that the wall of supermodels suggests

that something is wrong with you if you don’t look like one. So I created an alternative to suggest that it’s O

to look like a normal person.”

The Lammily dolls, which are 27 cm tall, have been on sale since last month.

Lammily also has other features. Unlike Barbie and her friends, whose pointed legs would force her to

walk on all fours if she were real, Lammily has articulated(枢接的) joints-able to walk, run, and play. The

doll can even be put in a yoga position.

What’s more, the Lammily dolls include a sticker package that can help to add real-life marks to the

dolls, including freckles(雀斑),acne(粉刺), moles(痣),and tattoos(纹身).

“You can also add minor cuts and bruises, like ones you’d get from falling down while snowboarding,”

Lamm told NBC.

“I feel that, right now, dolls are very perfect looking, while, in real life, few of us have perfect skin,”

Lamm told The Huffington Post. “Things like pimples are a natural part of who we are. So, why not give

dolls a real treatment?”

As Huffington Post said, “getting kids used to the idea that these things are completely normal and not

‘flaws’ to be ashamed of can only be a good thing.

36. Why did Nickolay Lamm make the Lammily doll?

A. Because he doesn’t agree with the unrealistic beauty standards of Barbie dolls.

B. Because an original Barbie doll doesn’t have a rounded face and a much thicker waist.

C. Because the original Barbie dolls are not of good quality.

D. Because he wants to create a Barbie doll that looks like a 19-year-old American girl.

37. Which of the following description can NOT be used to describe the Lammily doll?

A. It’s modeled after an average young American woman with real-life features.

B. It may have a rounded face and a thick waist.

C. It is about 27 cm tall with a sticker package.

D. It is perfect looking with no flaws.

38. What does Lamm mean when he says, “why not give dolls a real treatment?” in the second-to-last

paragraph?

A. Lammily dolls and the original dolls should be treated equally.

B. Rather than having perfect looks and skin, dolls should look natural with real-life marks.

C. The original dolls cannot be treated as real dolls.

D. ids should be get used to the idea that they shouldn’t be ashamed of flaws.

39. “these things” in the last paragraph refers to

A. things like pimples, minor cuts and bruises.

B. things like freckles, acne, moles, tattoos and a perfect figure.

C. things like a perfect looking with some pimples.

D. things like a rounded face and a thin waist.

40. What is the author’s attitude toward the Lammily doll?

Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if

you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you

cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of well-developed and hearty capacities to enjoy life. Most people are already

swamped(淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too

many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut.

Your house of life ought to be a mansion (豪宅) , a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional

interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.

Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you

only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find

plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry.

Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour

of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is

not someone who has a library but who likes a library.

Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've

brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased

your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more

human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a

bit.

Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.

41. According to the passage, a person is unsatisfied because ________.

A. he lacks means to meet his desires. B. he can’t satisfy his tastes.

C. he can’t earn enough money. D. he doesn’t have enough tastes and desires.

42. The underlined word “them” in paragraph 4 refers to ________.

A. arts B. spirits C. beautiful things D. ham and eggs

43. All the following rooms your house of life should have are mentioned except ___.

A. literature B. sports C. art D. money

44. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.

A. real happiness is one’s capability to enjoy life.

B. the more money we have, the happier we are.

C. sports contribute mainly to our physical fitness

D. music can relax us a lot

45. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Literature and sports B. House of Life

C. Secret of Health D. Money and Happiness

Last summer, I attended a horse race. I don’t know much about horses, but I was alarmed when I saw

a horse with a huge ulcer(溃疡) on its legs. “Surely this horse won’t race?” I asked. I was very surprised

that nobody in the crowd seemed concerned.

The horse began the race, but later it fell heavily. It had broken its leg. The next thing I saw was its

dead body in a bag, being driven past. No one seemed to care, except those who had bet on it. I know people

care for horse racing, but do they really care for horses? I doubt it.

Oh, but it’s a tradition, I hear you say. Wouldn’t the world be a boring place if we didn’t occasionally

hit, shoot and chase animals? Traditions are made by man and can be unmade. It was once acceptable to

kill servants when their master died, to visit the mental hospitals to laugh at the patients or to watch public

execution(执行死刑).

Nor should it be forgotten that in our progress to a more civilized world, animals have played an

important role They have fed us, carried us, worked for us, rescued us, died for us and sometimes just

saved us from loneliness. Surely by now they deserve our kindness. At the very least, they deserve our

respect.

Seeing a horse with a huge ulcer on its legs made to race and finally die, the author was sad. He called

on people to respect animals and be kind to them.

After reading the article, I can not help feeling angry. In the meantime, I am really ashamed of the

cruelty of us humans. Animals have always been humans’ best friends over history, and so never should

they be treated unfairly.

There are lots of stories about the bond between humans and animals. A professor once kept a pet dog,

which every day saw him off at the station in the morning and waited for his coming back from work in the

evening . Unfortunately, one day while at work, the professor had a heart attack and died later, never

returning to the station and his home again. The loyal dog, hoping to accompany his master home, had kept

waiting for him at the station every day as always for the following years until it died. Whenever I read the

story, the deep love between the dog and its owner moved me to tears.

Considering the important role animals play in the nature, I do believe that we should treat animals

kindly like friends. The world is shared by all the creatures living in it; on no condition should we consider

ourselves superior to any other species and kill them or harm them at will. Besides, the world is wonderful

because of biodiversity. Just imagine how boring it would be to live in a world without animals and other

species. Therefore, to make the world a better place, let’s be nice to animals and other species!

Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team.

“Football, tennis, cricket —— anything with a round ball, I was useless.” he says now with

a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire,

England.

It was a mountain bike he received for his 15 birthday that changed him. At first he went

biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend.

Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength.

At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.

The following year, he met John Ridgway and he was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s

School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly

interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided

that this would be his future.

In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his fist long-distance

expedition towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite(冻疮),

th

ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled(雪橇)

up and over rocky ice. Next October, Saunders, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctic to

If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame.

Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion,

they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been

worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion.

Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend

large sum of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot

afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing their old-fashioned

dresses. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on.

No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society.

Fashion designers are rarely connected with necessary things like warmth, comfort and durability

(耐用年限). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact

that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly

be a man who hasn’t at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin

dress on a winter day, or picking her way through deep snow in high heeled shoes.

When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are

obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic

qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by

fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and

reliability(稳定耐用)? That is for you to decide.

54. Designers and big stores always make money _________.

A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry

B. because they are capable of predicting new fashions

C. by constantly changing the fashions in women’s clothes

D. because they attach great importance to quality in women’s clothing

55. To the writer, the fact that women change their old-fashioned dresses is seen as __________.

A. a waste of money B. a waste of time C. an expression of taste D.

expression of love beauty

56. New fashions in clothing are created for ________.

A. the commercial exploitation of women

strength’s of character

C. basic qualities of inconstancy and instability

contribution to society

57. By saying “the conclusions to be drawn are obvious” (Line 1 to line 2, Para. 4), the writer

means that _________.

A. women’s inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed at

B. women are better able to put up with discomfort

C. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers

D. men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion

D

员和财产损失). The ministry will find out the cause through thorough investigation and take

effective measures to prevent similar accidents.

“China’s high-speed train is advanced and qualified. We have confidence in it,” he said.

“The damaged rails have been repaired and were ready to restart operation but the

reopening was delayed by the stormy weather,” according to Wang. Wang did not provide the exact

time when the line would start operating again.

The accident occurred at about 830 p. m. Saturday on a bridge near Wenzhou when bullet

train D301 rear-ended(追尾) D3115, which reportedly lost power after lightning strike.

第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从下面A-F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。

选项中有一项为多余选项。

A. The secret of the writer’s success

B. A writer with enduring popularity

C. Well-received creation to encourage Brits

D. The insight into human nature

E. Writing styles in different stages

F. The story appreciates for school students

61. ________________

Charles Dickens is often thought of as one of England’s great writers. Yet for many his

language is old-fashioned and his story plots are often improbable. Why, Dickens, out of so

many other great English writers, has made the list? How then to explain Dickens’s enduring

popularity?

62. _______________

One reason undoubtedly is the British government’s insistence that every child studies

a Dickens’ novel at school. Alongside William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens is a compulsory

(必读的)writer on every English literature school reading list. His stories, though often

over-long by today’s standard, are superbly written moral tales. They are filled with colorful

characters.

63. ________________

But what makes his books stand out from other English writers is his insight into human

nature. Dickens, like Shakespeare, tells us truths about human behavior that are as true to

citizens of the 21 century as they were to his readers in the 19 century. Readers have returned

to Dickens’s books again and again over the years to see what he has to say about readers’

own time.

64. ________________

The BBC adapted one of his less well-known novels, Little Dorrit, into a popular television

drama that introduced many Brits to the novel for the first time. A dark story about greed and

money, it was the perfect story to illustrate the bad times. No surprise then that it was Dickens

Britons turned to, during the economic crisis last year, to make sense of world rapidly falling

apart.

65. ________________

Readers of the 19 and early 20 century usually prized Dickens’s earlier novels for

their humor and pathos(悲痛). While recognizing the virtues of these books, critics today tend

to rank more highly the later works because of their formal coherence and acute perception

(洞察力)of the human condition. For as long as Dickens’s novels have something to say to modern

audience, it seems likely that he will remain one of Britain’s best loved writers.
