inauguraleditorial,Ihopetoshareabitofmyapproachtothefieldofpersonalityandthe

sensibilitythatwillguidethejournalforthenextfewyears.

Formostofmyundergraduatecareer,IwasanEnglishliteraturemajorwhoneverthelessfrequentedthe

heexperienceofreadingarticlesin

thejournals(typicallyJPSPandtheJournalofPersonality)thatsoldmeonthescientificstudyofpersonality.

Thisexperienceleftmewithasenseoftheimportanceofourscholarlyjournalsnotsimplyasaplaceto

publishscienceforscientistsbutasawaytoattractscholarstothefieldandtoinformtheworldmorebroadly

aboutwhythescinction

mightbeimportantforallpsychologyjournals,

today,manystudentsareintroducedtoourfieldthroughcoursesthatreviewonlyclassictheoriesin

personality,co,Ibelievethat

thetopjournalinourfieldmustbeonethatconveysthesheerinterestandenthusiasmofitsscholarsforthe

esmustcontributetoknowledgeinarealway,andtheymustbewrittenwithclarityandwith

asenseofthatbroadaudience.

MyvisionforthePersonalityProcessesandIndividualDifferencessectionoftheJournalPersonalityand

SocialPsychologyismyvisionofthefieldofpersonalityitself—broad,exciting,dynamic,andthehubofthe

sionofpersonalitypsychologyencompassesalloftheotherareas

becausewefocusontheperson—inwhomthevariousdevelopmental,cognitive,social,neuropsychological,

andpotentiallypathologicalprocessesaremanifestandwhosebehaviorthefieldofpsychologysetsasits

ersityamongscholarswhoproudlydeclarethemselvespersonalitypsychologistsisstunningand

snoquestionthatvariedindividualswithinterests

rangingfromtraitstopersonologytoculturalpsychologytoclinicalpsychologytobehaviorgeneticsto

neurosciofourdifferences,we

theseapproachesalonetellsusaboutthewholeperson,

andallofthem(andsomewehavenoteventhoughtofyet)arenecessarytounderstandingtheperson:That

isthatJPSPwouldreflectthisbreadthby

welcominghigh-qualityworkinitsmanyforms.

Ihopethatauthorswillbecourageousinthequestionstheyaskintheirresearchandembracethe

complexitiesofpersonalityandbehavior(actualbehavior).Nostrongscientificinquiryshouldeverbe“too

interesting”ragescholarstopursueresearchthatcontributestoourunderstandingofpeople

(ratherthan,say,scales).Icanassureyou,atleast,thatsuchintellectualcouragewillbemetwitheditorial

PSP:PPIDtobetheoutletinwhichtheverybest,mostexciting,mostprovocative,andmost

hejournalwillbeviewedasexcitingand

dynamicinanotherrespectaswell:Ihaveencouragedmyassociateeditorstobedecisiveandtorender

decisionsasexpeditiouslyaspossible.

Irealizethatmany,manyverygoodpapersareultimatelyrejectedforpublicationinJPSP,andIwould

liketoaddafewwordsheretorejectedauthorsfromtheperspectiveofsomeonewhohascollectedher

ourecognizethatbyvirtueofbeingrejectedbyJPSP,youhavejoined

anesteemedgroupofoutstandingscholars,manyofwhomhavemadesubstantialcontributionsto

tionshouldnotbeviewedasindicatingthatyourcontributionsto

ularlytonewscholarsinthefield,Iwanttosaythat

persistenceiskey:Goodideasthataretestedwithrigorousmethodswilleventuallyfindtheirplacein

womantoholdthispost,althoughIcanscarcelyimagineIamthefirsttobequalifiedtoserveinthisregard.

Inclosing,then,Iwouldliketodedicatethisissueofthejournaltothemanywomenwhosescholarly

contributionstopersonalitypsychologypavedthewayforthosewomen(myselfincluded)whopassionately

xtraordinarilyprivilegedtoserveinthiscapacity.
