My Way of Going to School on My Electric Scooter
Hi there! My name is Tommy and I'm nine years old. I'm in
the fourth grade at Oakwood Elementary School. I love so many
things about my school - my awesome teacher Mrs. Jenkins,
seeing my friends every day, and all the fun activities we get to
do. But one of my very favorite parts of the school day is my ride
there and back on my electric scooter!
I started riding my e-scooter to school at the beginning of
this year. My mom and dad bought it for me for my 9th birthday
after I begged and begged them for one. They weren't sure at
first since I'm still pretty young. But I promised to be super
careful and responsible. I even watched a ton of safety videos to
learn all the rules. Finally, they gave in and got me the most
awesome present ever!
My scooter is bright blue with yellow lightning bolt decals on
it. It can go up to 10 mph, which feels crazy fast when you're just
a kid! Of course, I'm not allowed to go that speed except at the
skate park. There are different speed modes, and I keep it on the
lowest one for my ride to school which is about 5 mph. It's really
easy to control and has a nice thumb throttle.
In the mornings, I wake up around 7am and get myself ready
for school. I put on my uniform which is a white polo shirt and
navy blue shorts or pants. Then I grab a quick breakfast, usually a
bowl of cereal or a granola bar. While I'm eating, I double check
that I've packed everything I need in my backpack for the day -
books, homework, pencils, snacks, you know the drill.
Once I'm all set, I head out to the garage to get my scooter. I
put on my helmet (very important for safety!), elbow and knee
pads too. My dad makes sure my helmet is on properly before
I'm allowed to leave. He's been teaching me the hand signals for
turns and stopping that I need to use while riding. I know to ride
on the sidewalk or side of the road, never in the street with cars.
I'm a safe scooter rider!
Then I'm off, scooting down the street at a nice easy pace. I
live about a mile from school, so it takes me around 15-20
minutes to get there. I love feeling the wind in my face and
watching the trees and houses go by. Sometimes I race against
squirrels running along the fence tops!
The route I take is really nice. It goes through a pretty
neighborhood with lots of cool big houses and nice yards to look
at. Then I cross a bridge over a creek where I can see ducks
swimming below. After that, I enter the park and get to scooter
along a paved trail surrounded by trees and nature. That part is
my favorite. Sometimes I see rabbits or birds and have to be
extra careful.
Once I get close to the school, I have to really slow down and
follow all the rules. I use the designated student drop-off area to
get off my scooter and walk it through the gates. There are
teachers on duty watching to make sure everyone is being safe.
I park my scooter at the racks and make sure to lock it up
tight with my U-lock. Leaving it unlocked is one of my biggest
fears - I would be devastated if it got stolen! With my scooter all
secure, I head inside to start my school day.
After the long day of learning and sitting at desks, I'm always
so excited to get back on my scooter for the ride home. As soon
as the final bell rings, I rush out to the racks to retrieve it. I get my
helmet and gear back on, then I'm free to scooter away!
The ride home is just as fun, maybe even a little more
exciting since I don't have to be quite as cautious and
rule-following as the morning ride. I go a little faster and take
some jumps off curbs or do spins along the way when no one is
around. I burn off all my pent-up energy from sitting in class by
scooting as fast as I can. It's such a thrill!
When I get home, I put my scooter away in the garage to
charge up overnight for the next day. My dad has a special
charging station all set up for it. He's taught me to be really
careful with the charging cords and outlets. Safety first with
electric stuff!
I absolutely love my electric scooter and riding it to and from
school every day. Not only is it a total blast, but it's also better for
the environment than getting driven in a gas car. My parents feel
good about letting me scooter since it's getting me exercise and
fresh air instead of just sitting in the backseat. I get to be
independent and in control.
Of course, there are some downsides too. When it's raining
or snowy out, I have to take the bus or get a ride instead of
scooting, which is no fun. And one time my back tire went flat
and I had to walk my scooter the rest of the way, which took
forever. But overall, the good definitely outweighs the bad!
I hope I get to keep riding my electric scooter to school for a
really long time. I'm sure I'll have awesome memories of scooting
through the neighborhood and park when I'm older. For now
though, I'm just happy to be a fourth grade kid with a wicked
cool way to get to school every morning!
