Passage 1
Every evening Sylvie left her grandmother’s houses at five-thirty to bring their cow home. The old animal spent her days
out in the open country eating sweet grass. It was Sylvie’s job to bring her home to be milked. When the cow heard Sylvie’s
voice, she would hide among the bushes.
On a summer evening in June, it took Sylvie longer than usual to find her cow. It was already eight o’clock and Sylvie
wondered it her grandmother would be angry with her for being so late. So the child hurried to find the cow through the dark
forest. Suddenly a hungry and tired young man appeared on the road. He said he lost his way in the forest and asked for help.
Although being a little afraid, Sylvie took him back to her grandmother’s home. She offered dinner to the man.
After eating, the stranger explained he was a hunter, who was catching birds in the forest. He said he would give ten
dollars to the person who helped him catch birds. That night Sylvie’s dreams were full of all the wonderful things she and her
grandmother could buy with ten dollars.
The next morning, Sylvie woke up early and left home. She wasn’t willing to help the man kill birds. The young man
