My Neighborhood Street

I live on a pretty normal street in the suburbs, but there's

actually a lot of interesting things to see if you really pay

attention. My street is called Oak Tree Lane, and I've lived here

ever since I was a little kid. Even though I've walked up and down

this street thousands of times, I'm always noticing new details.

Let me tell you about all the cool stuff on my street, starting

from my house and going down towards the park at the end.

Right outside my house, we have a big oak tree, which is where

the street gets its name from. The tree is probably over 100 years

old! Its trunk is really thick and gnarled, and its branches stretch

out across the whole front yard, making a nice shady spot in the

summer. Every fall, the tree drops thousands of acorns all over

the yard and we have to rake them up. It's kind of a pain, but I

also like collecting the acorn caps and using them in craft

projects.

Next door, the Johnsons have the brightest house on the

whole block. Mr. Johnson is really into Christmas lights, so every

December their house looks like the grand prize winner of a

lights contest. He starts putting them up right after Thanksgiving

and works for weeks stringing up all these flashing, blinking,

twinkling lights everywhere – on the roof, in the trees, lining the

driveway and walkway. At night, you can see the glow from

blocks away! My little sister thinks it's magical, but I think it's just

a bit over-the-top.

Across the street from the Johnsons is old Mrs.

McGillicuddy's house. She's this tiny old lady who must be at

least 100 years old. I've never actually talked to her, but I see her

out working in her garden almost every morning when I'm

waiting for the school bus. She has the most amazing garden,

with carefully tended rows of flowers and vegetables all growing

together. Even in the winter, she's out there bundled up in a coat

and boots, clearing away dead plants to get ready for spring. The

garden takes up her whole front yard – there's no grass at all!

Just a kaleidoscope of colors when everything is blooming. My

mom says she grows the best tomatoes in town and she's always

trying to trade for some of Mrs. McGillicuddy's crop.
