how to find Happiness without Buying it ?
Our materialistic society has led us to believe that happiness cannot obtained without having
money .
Rather than learning to be satisfied with what we have ,we are taught to want more . We learn
from advertising , and from the media , ____21____ we need to buy some toys in order to make
ourselves happy , or ______22_____(fulfill ) emotional needs , and that the purchase they are
trying to talk us into will provide us with the psychological comfort we are looking
____23_______.
Unfortunately , as a society we have bought into these _______24____ (misguide) messages
and have come to believe that spending money on certain items ____25________(bring ) us fame ,
fortune ,happiness , beauty ,or popularity . As a result , we trade hours of our lives
working ,sacrificing time that _______26_____ have been spent with our families ,for the
pursuit of the almighty (万能的) dollar.
Actually ,there are a number of ways to enjoy life without the need for a great deal of
money . For example , think about __27_______ you would spend your time , and what you
would do for enjoyment . Change your focus form material possessions to ____28_____that bring
you enjoyment ,such as spending quality time with your family and friends. Certainly ,it is
important to work and earn enough to provide for our basic needs and the needs of our families ,
but it is important to recognize ______29_____ the desire for personal possessions becomes
overly consuming , _____30_______otherwise will upset a balance between a satisfying work life
and a rich home life. The best way to achieve such a balance is to ensure the drive for material
possessions does not become all consuming.

Too much time spent on your cell phone doesn’t mean you’re more connected and happier.
A new research from scientist at Ken State University in Kent , Ohio shows that the more
time college students spend on their cell phones , the more ______41_____ they are and the
more their academic performance will ____42______.
Jacob Barkley , Aryn Karpinsiki and Andrew Lepp studied 500 Kent State University
students , each of whom reported their daily cell phone use for the year as well as their level of
anxiety and ______43_____with their life.
At the end of the year , the students also _____44_____ the researchers to see their official
school records for their whole grade point average (GPA) . Not only was greater cell phone use
______45________related to satisfaction and happiness indicators , it was also associated with
lower GPAs------ mainly because the students were more anxious and unable to __46______on
their studies.
While _______47_____research found that cell phones can improve social ineractions and
reduce feelings of isolation ,the latest findings ,published in the journal Computers in Human
Behavior , suggest that constant ______48____ to information and people may be a double
edged-sword(双刃剑)。The researchers assume , for example , that students may feel anxious if
they feel obliged to be in constant ____49_______with their friends . Some may have difficulty
disconnecting , which only feeds into the stress linked to their phones . Being alone occasionally
can be ____50______for well being , but students who are tied to their phones aren’t getting these
respites.(暂缓)

Artists have long claims alcohol and other drugs as inspiration for their creativity . But is
there really a ____51_______ between intoxication and inspiration ? A recent study published in
Consciousness and Cognition explored the effects of moderate drunkenness on people’s creativity .
The authors suggest that alcohol’s well-known effect in ___52______ executive function may be
helpful for these types of creative problems :” Sometimes a reduced ability to
____53_______one’s attention can have implications for select cognitive tasks ,” they write.
The finding raise the question of whether drugs that ___54______attention and focus , in
particular , stimulants (兴奋剂) , would have the opposite effect on creative thinking .
______55_____ very little research has been done on the issue , and what results exist so far have
been mixed . The outcomes may well vary according to individual ____56____to the drugs.
______57_____, some research has found that while stimulants can ____58_____test performance
for those who are less intelligent , for the smartest folks , the drugs can have the opposite effect.
If less executive function is linked to more creativity , this may also help explain why artists ,
writers and musicians appear to be more ______59_______ to have an addiction . Perhaps
creative people are more likely than others to be ____60_______to drugs in the first place , as a
possible source of inspiration . And then ,if reduced executive function is _____61______ in part
for their initial talent , this , too , could make them more easily influenced by
______62_______once they start using . Having less executive control before you even take drugs
means you ‘ll have less ability to stop once you start.
Whatever the real relationship between drunkenness , addiction and art , the authors
________63____that their study findings don’t give people ______64____ to get drunk to “inspire
the muse.” Co-author Jennifer Wiley ,associate professor of psychology at the University of
Illinois at Chicago , told the British Psychological Society ‘s Research Digest:” We tested what
happens when people are slightly drunk ------- not when people drank to ______65_____. There
could be no argument form these findings that drinking excessively would have the same effects.”

Exciting concertos (协奏曲)from Vivadi’s The Four Seasons can boost mental alertness ,
according to research from Northumbria University .
The findings , which are published in Experimental Psychology , show that the exciting first
movement (乐章), in particular , is capable of enhancing attention.
In the experiment a group of 14 young adults were given a mental concentration task to
perform. They were asked to press the space bar on a key board when a green square appeared
on screen and ignore different coloured circles and squares that appeared at intervals. The
participants carried out this task both in silence and while listening to each of the four concertos
while their brain activity was measured using EEG brain imaging .
Results showed that participants responded correctly faster when listening to the exciting
Spring concerto . When listening to the concerto , the average response time in performing the
task was 393.8 milliseconds (毫秒) as opposed to 408.1 milliseconds when the task was carried
out in silence . This response time rose to 413.3 milliseconds when they listened to the slower and
sadder Autumn music , therefore showing a decrease in mental capacity .
Psychologist Dr. Leigh Riby said , “ The Spring movement enhanced overall activity within
the brain but had an exaggerated effect on the area of the brain that’s important for emotional
processing . It seemed to give rise to particular imagery in the brain and evoke positive , contented
feeling which translated into high levels of cognitive functioning
Dr Riby suggests that the Spring movement is particularly special and could be used in
therapy and is , in fact , quite a familiar piece to most people as it has been used successfully in
marketing to induce mood and influence behavior.
He also found that the key in which the music was written had no impact on the brain
performance . While the Spring concerto , which is written in a major key enhanced cognitive
function ,the Autumn movement , which is also written in a major key , did not.
He added , “ This experiment shows that cognitive capacity is enhanced when pleasant and
arousing stimuli are introduced.”
66. Under what circumstance did participants respond correctly faster?
A. When they were in complete silence.
B. When they were listening to slow and sad music
C. When they were listening to the Autumn concerto
D. When they were listening to the Spring concerto
67. What did say about the Spring movement in Paragraph 5?
A. It could evoke negative feelings
B. It seemed helpful for improving cognitive function .
C. It had surprising little impact on the brain.
D. It enhanced overall activity of the body .
68. Why most people are quite familiar with the Spring movement ?
A. It has been used in therapy settngs
B. It has been successfully used in marketing
C. People think it is quite special and classic
D. People usually listen to it to adjust their mood.
69. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. The key in which the music was written was never important
B. The Spring and Autumn movement were written in different keys.
C. Pleasant and arousing stimuli can enhance cognitive capacity .
D. The Autumn concerto could enhance cognitive ability .
