Are you interested in reading newspapers? Many people say newspapers are at death's door.
Every year some newspapers go out of business. But why are things so bad for newspapers?
Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was born in the 1600s. Newspapers
saw their most successful time in the early 20th century.
However, because of the birth of the radio and TV, newspapers began to fall. By the mid-20th
century, people simply didn't have to depend on newspapers for news any more. Some
breaking news much more quickly via broadcast media. As a result, afternoon newspapers
were the first to die. People coming home from work turned on the TV instead of opening a
newspaper. But newspapers still managed to survive. Although they couldn't compete with
the television in terms of speed, they could provide in-depth(深度)reports.
But newspaper had another heavier blow(打击)in the 1990s. With the birth of the
Internet, lots of information became free. Many newspaper readers preferred to read news
online for free. In today's world, it still the same.
So where will go in the future? Will they die? Maybe not. Now many newspapers are
changing. They are trying to keep pace with the development of society by using digital(数
字的)technology.

It's reported that many people believe the five-second rule, which says that food dropped on
the floor for five seconds or less is safe to eat.
Donald Schaffner, a professor of food science, thinks sometimes bacteria(细菌)can be
absorbed(吸收)in less than a second. For example, sticky(黏的), wet food will take in
bacteria as soon as it hits the floor. "The wetter the food, the higher the risk of taking in
bacteria," Schaffner says.
Anthony Hilton, a professor at Aston University's School of Life and Health Sciences, says,
"Food that is on the floor is never completely risk-free to eat. But if you drop dry food on the
floor, it's usually okay if you pick it up very quickly. Most clean homes don't have dangerous
bacteria."
What if you drop food on the kitchen counter? Dr. Steven Dowshen says people should think
twice before following the five-second rule. "Kitchen counters might have more dangerous
bacteria."
Whether or not people should eat dropped food depends on the type of food and the
surface on which it falls. So it might be best to follow this rule instead: When in doubt, throw
it out.

Darrius was born with three fingers on his right hand and one on his left hand. He had to
work hard to do things that were easy for others. Every time his classmates tried to help, he
would say, "Thanks, but I can do it myself." He learned to use the four fingers to do different
things.
When Darrius was 10, he told his father that he liked piano music very much. "It's too bad
you can't play," his father said. But the boy took that as a challenge. "I will show people that I
can," he said to himself.
Months later, a neighbor gave him an old piano when she moved away. He taught himself to
play the piano and practiced for hours a day.
Darrius's favorite piano music is River Flows in You by Yiruma, a Korean musician. It took
Darrius a year to learn it. "I have to come up with my own way with only 4 fingers," he said.
When he succeeded, he felt so proud. Later he was lucky enough to play the music together
with Yiruma at a famous concert hall! Yiruma encouraged Darrius to follow his dream of

When we think of farming, we usually think of green fields in the country, outside the city.
Sam works on a very different kind of farm, in the center of Toronto, Canada. "We grow fruit,
vegetables and herbs(草药)," says Sam. "But not many people know the farm is here. You
can't see it from the street. It's on top of an office building."
Rooftop(屋顶)farming is becoming popular in big cities like Toronto, New York and
London. The roofs of buildings are often just wasted space, but this space can be used for
growing food, right in the middle of the city. Sam explains how it works. "We grow
everything in big pots and boxes—there are hundreds of them. We catch rainwater to water
the plants when the weather is dry."
The rooftop farm where Sam works belongs to a restaurant called Green Garden, on the first
floor of the building. The farm produces about half the restaurant's fruit and vegetables. Sam
believes that the rooftop farm is what makes Green Garden special. "We help to keep food
production local. We don't need to transport(运输)our food anywhere. It's better for the
environment."
The food from the rooftop is fresher too. "When the fruit and vegetables are ripe, we can
pick them and use them right away. They taste better when they're really fresh," says Sam. "I
believe that there will be more rooftop farms in the city soon. It could be the farming of the
future."

阅读下面短文,并用英语回答问题(请注意每小题后面的词数要求)。
Friends play an important part in our lives. Friendship between friends is thought to be
very important. Many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship
back. That is one of the causes why some friendships don't last very long. Teenager Center
did a survey on "What do you think the most important thing about friendship is?" 368
teenagers took part in the survey. The following is the results.
Dr. Allen wrote a report to teenagers about it. Let's read it together.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must trust each other. If you don't tell the
truth, you may lose your friend's trust.
Generosity(慷慨)means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don't have to
give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you share your ideas and feelings.
Understanding can be valuable to a friend. Everyone needs understanding and help with a
problem. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. You can try to put yourself in
your friend's place, so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have some things in
common. In fact, good friendship will just not easily last. That's to say, you must give as much
as you take, or friendship will die away.
