EPIC 1320 ton, 190 foot tall statue of the God of War

'It’s 58 metres (190ft) tall, weighs over 1,320 tonnes, and it

contains over 4,000 strips of bronze. The monument is so

big that there’s even an 8,000sqm museum inside of it.

Guan Yu lived during China’s turbulent Three Kingdoms

period. He carried an axe-like weapon called a Green

Dragon Crescent Blade, which has been immortalised with

him as part of the statue.

'Both the police and criminals worship him due to his

righteousness and loyalty. Him and Zhang Fei were

famous generals. Zhang Fei’s shortcoming was his bad

temper and treatment towards his subordinates which led

to his end. Guan Yu was good to subordinates but had

some problems with those of similar rank or above him and

was quite proud and arrogant. That led to his downfall.'

here's a close up picture when it was still under

[–]Im_King_Flippy_Nips

So he was a real general, immortalized in history and with

this tribute, or he became a god in Chinese lore as OP’s

title would imply..?

[–]SuperNoobyGamer 469 points 9 hours ago

Both. Gods of the Chinese lore are tall tales of real

historical figures, similar to what we called saints. Even the

Yellow Emperor, god of gods, is based off amalgamations

of real historical emperors. [–]foyamoon 3 points 9

The thing about the Chinese afterlife was that if you are

very good at doing something when you are alive, the

Emperor of Heaven would essentially employ you to do the

same job in the afterlife--and you basically become the

patron God of that job.

That’s both a neat fact and a really awesome theological

That is probably how Zeus and the like came about

anyhow. Chinese just cut the bullshit.

[–]mrdoriangrey 20 points 9 hours ago

Yup. Not very different from the way Roman Catholics

have patron saints.

[–]RyuNoKami 32 points 9 hours ago

nah, they got more bureaucratic.

want to make sure you never die? just be like Sun Wu

Kong and take your name off the Book of Life and Death.

oh, no one has the authority to amend that. lol不,他们更官僚主义。 [–]aberusugi 118 points

> Chinese God of War

> Not Lu Bu

I don't understand this.

[–]Soziele 97 points 9 hours ago

Gotta be more than just strong to be named a god. Lu Bu

was the greater warrior, but he also was executed in

disgrace after betraying people left and right, including

murdering his adoptive father (twice even, two separate

people adopted him). His own men captured him while he

was drunk during a siege and surrendered.

Guan Yu was renowned not just for his ability in battle, but

also his devotion to honor and family, supporting his oath

brothers until his death. [!----][–]Mursenery 336 points

It's like a modern day Collossus of Rhodes这就像现代的罗德岛太阳神雕像。 [–]jackn8r 205

Colossus was 108ft this is 190. [–]PorcaMiseria 242 points 10 hours

To me that says more about how big the Colossus was.

This statue is huge but it was made with the help of

modern cranes and technology. The Colossus was built in

292 BCE, every inch of it carefully hand crafted, and it was

108 ft tall. That's insane to me. [–]jacsAma 65 points

what is the history of this statue? I want to know. [–]Eidolones 114 points 11 hours ago

The statue is of Guan Yu, a general of Shu during the

Three Kingdoms period (~220CE) and governor of

Jingzhou, the city that built the statue. Later he was

revered as the god of war for both his prowess in battle as

well as being an embodiment of honor and fealty. The

exterior of the statue is made of bronze, it's 48 meters tall

(58m including base, since Guan Yu was captured and

killed when he was 58), and weighs 1200 metric tons. The

halberd he's holding (his signature weapon) is 70m long.

Construction started in February 2014 and the statue

opened to public in July 2016.

[–]cybervseas 30 points 10

That's a lot of statue to be finished in just 2 years. Good for

them!

some of the craziest bridges in the most remote parts of
