Part 3 Spot Dictation
(每小题: 分)
Directions: In this section you will hear a passage or passages three
times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen
carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second
time, you are required to fill in the blanks with the information you
have just heard. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time,
you should check what you have written.
Questions 1 to 10 are based on the following passage or dialog.
Football is simpler than any other game, calling for nothing more
than a ball, 27 inches around and weighing 7/8 of a pound, and two
goals. The field can be of (1), and men of all sizes can play. Unlike
basketball, which has become a game for (2), the finest football stars
may very well look like (3) . On England's best team, several players
are 5 feet 8 (4) . The greatest Brazilian star Pele stood only 5 feet 9
and weighed only 160 pounds.
For all this, football players, 11 to a side, give an exhibition of(5)
and strength hard to match. With all parts of their body except their
hands they (6) the ball with a kind of dancing-master's ability. They
run back and forth at (7) speed for two halves of 45 minutes. There
are no time-outs (暂停) except for serious (8) .
For their performances, star players receive (9) of millions of dollars
a season. But they are (10) . When a club pays millions for a great
player, it may get back about ten times that in ticket sales and
advertising.
Today, the fight against doping (用兴奋剂) is a continuous battle
that is possible to win with international efforts.
Doping is defined as the (11) , whether substance or method,
potentially dangerous to athletes' (12) and capable of enhancing
their performance, or the presence in the athlete's body of a
Questions 11 to 20 are based on the following passage or dialog.
substance, or the use of a (13) on the list attached to the Olympic
Movement Anti-Doping Code (法规).
Doping is completely against the spirit of the Olympic Games: the
(14) game. Many of the banned substances and methods are
dangerous to athletes' health and can cause short- and (15)
damage.
Athletes must be very careful about any medicines they are taking,
because many common (16) , such as pain-killers, can contain
banned substances. If a competitor wants to use a banned substance
for treatment, he or she must get the (17) approval of the Medical
Advisory (咨询) Committee of the IOC Medical Commission (委员
会).
If an athlete tests (18) in the Olympic Games, he/she will be (19)
from the Olympics for a period of two years for the first time they
are caught. All (20) or medals achieved by the athlete will be
removed. The fight against doping continues.
Perhaps second only to the question "Are we there yet" parents on
vacation with their children hate hearing "I think I'm gonna be sick!"
as they (21) along the highway.
Car sickness can make family vacations unfortunate for both(22)
and the rest of the family. Motion sickness, which includes car
sickness, sea sickness and air sickness, affects most people to (23)
degrees. Symptoms range from a (24) feeling of discomfort to
nausea (恶心) and vomiting (呕吐).
Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas say the
discomfort results from (25) messages being sent to the brain. The
brain relies on messages from the inner ear, the muscles and the
eyes to tell it where the body is in space. When any of these body
parts send different messages, the brain gets (26) , and you get
queasy (想呕吐的). For example, if you're reading in the car, your
inner ear knows you're moving, but your muscles think you're sitting
still and your eyes don't see anything moving because they're
looking at the page. On an airplane, your inner ear senses the
motion, but your eyes only see the inside of the airplane, which
looks (27) .
Treatments for motion sickness range from (28) remedies (疗法) like
ginger (生姜) capsules (胶囊) to medicine. If you suffer from motion
sickness, try sitting in the front seat of the car, (29) reading while in
the car, and look out the front window rather than the side
windows. On a plane, pick a seat over a (30) . On a boat, try to stay
near the center. There is less motion in these areas.
Questions 21 to 30 are based on the following passage or dialog.
Newspapers keep us informed about what is going on in the world.
They (31) , educate, and examine the events of the day. For
hundreds of millions of people (32), newspapers are part of their
daily lives.
Newspapers are published at (33) , but they usually come out daily
or weekly. Of the nearly (34) newspapers being published around
the world, about 2,600 are published in the United States. More than
half―about 1,800―of them are (35). Some newspapers have a lot of
subscribers: people who pay to have each issue (36) to them. For
example, The Wall Street Journal (日报) and USA Today each have
about two (37) buyers. These include small-town (38) and
special-interest papers, such as those written for people who enjoy
the same hobby.
Newspapers provide a service to the (39) by providing information at
little cost. But they are businesses, so they need to (40) . In most
newspapers, between one-third and two-thirds of the paper is taken
up by advertising.
Questions 31 to 40 are based on the following passage or dialog.
