History of Ma Huateng's Entrepreneurship

Ma Huateng, nicknamed Little Brother Ma, was born in Shantou, Guangdong

Province on October 29, 1971, belonging to the second generation of officials and

the second generation of rich people. His father, Ma Chenshu, had experience in

politics and business, and gave him some experience guidance in the development

of Ma Huateng's career. His mother, Huang Huiqing, once owned 60% of the shares

of Tencent when it was founded, and served as the legal representative of

Shenzhen Tencent Computer System Co., Ltd. for a long time.

Ma Huateng was particularly interested in astronomy when he was a child. He

wanted to become an astronomer in the future, but he found that astronomy was

not valued in China. If he chose to study astronomy, he could only become a

geography teacher in the future, which was inconsistent with his ideal. Later, Ma

Huateng discovered that this was his interest.

In 1989, he was admitted to Shenzhen University and applied for the computer

major. Ma Huateng, who studied computer science during his college years, was

very focused, and his interests added to his strength. He often studies some other

contents, such as computer virus treatment and computer maintenance, after

completing the knowledge in the university textbooks.

Shenzhen, as the frontier of reform and opening up, with the development of

economy, the computer industry is also in full swing. Ma Huateng watched the

seniors earn extra money through computer knowledge, and he also got the idea.

But soon Ma Huateng found that Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen was just a simple

assembly base for electronic products at that time. He had no experience in this

field, and he was not competent at all. Ma Huateng was very disappointed, but this

deepened. Ma Huateng was determined to learn computer well. On the eve of

graduation in 1993, he designed a stock analysis system, and the sale of this

software brought Ma Huateng an income of 50000 yuan. Later, he worked with his

classmates to develop a stock receiving system, and Ma Huateng accumulated

some wealth through these software.

In 1994, Ma Huateng made 100000 yuan from software development and

invested it in the stock market. He bought the software at Shenzhen Development,

when it was only 6 yuan per share. With the stock price soaring, Ma Huateng's

100000 yuan became 700000 yuan, which made him have millions of capital soon,

laying the foundation for independent entrepreneurship.

After graduating from Shenzhen University in 1993, Ma Huateng began to look

for a job. By chance, he met a classmate in a bookstore. He worked mainly in the

production of pagers in Runxun, a large private enterprise. Their company just

lacked an engineer who wrote C language. Ma Huateng was just suitable for this

position. During the five or six years of working in Runxun, Ma Huateng recalled

that in the past, those who knew procedures but did not know communication and

other communications did not know procedures, and they just knew both, which

also laid a foundation for their own entrepreneurship in the future.

In November 1998, Ma Huateng left Runxun, and with the funds accumulated

from stock speculation and work, he joined four classmates and friends to establish

Tencent Computer System Co., Ltd. The main business of the company at the initial

stage was not instant messaging software. Ma Huateng had a chance to contact

OICQ, an instant chat tool developed by Israelis. Later, he found that the software

did not have a Chinese version, so he built a Chinese OICQ imitating OICQ. In

February 1999, OICQ went online. That is, QQ later gained popularity among users

because of its online address book saving mechanism and its innovative functions

such as QQ group, The number of users began to grow rapidly.

In 2000, when NASDAQ crashed in the United States, the global Internet

industry suffered a great impact. At this time, Tencent was also in danger. It almost

sold its developed ICO software to Shenzhen Telecom Data Bureau for 600000 yuan,

but it failed because of the price. The software could not be sold, but users grew

rapidly. The investment required to operate QQ was increasing. Ma Huateng had

to raise money everywhere. Ma Huateng changed six versions, More than 20 pages

of business plan began to look for foreign venture capital, and finally IDG and PCK

Digital won the first investment.

At this time, China Mobile just launched the mobile dream network. Ma

Huateng saw the business opportunity and began to seek cooperation with it. He

also launched a 5 yuan monthly package, which can send QQ information to mobile

phones indefinitely, thereby obtaining a large amount of revenue, so as to support

Tencent to tide over the crisis.

In June 2004, Ma Huateng led Tencent Holdings to be officially listed on the

main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with the stock code of 700, which

is also the first Chinese Internet enterprise listed on the main board of Hong Kong.

During the listing, Ma Huateng met Liu Zhiping, sincerely invited him to join

Tencent, and quickly promoted him to Tencent President.

In 2005, after Tencent made certain achievements, Ma Huateng began to lead

Tencent to diversify in an all-round way. For example, Tencent games, Tencent, QQ

music, Tenpay and other businesses together with QQ constitute a huge product

ecosystem.

Since 2010, mobile Internet has begun to emerge. Ma Huateng, who is famous

for his work with product managers, quickly accepted Guangyuan Zhang

Xiaolong's suggestion to develop a voice chat app, and personally named this app

WeChat. At present, Tencent's market value exceeds 5 trillion Hong Kong dollars,

and Ma Huateng's market value is more than 40 billion dollars. In addition to

Tencent's own products, JD, Meituan, Didi, etc., which we contact in daily life, are

also behind Ma Xiaoge.
