Key to Exercises

2. Comprehension Check

2.1 Focusing on the main ideas

One day, at the registrar’s office of a college, I noticed how parents are

behaving with their college-age children nowadays. Obviously students are

young adults and can handle registration by themselves, but their parents

completely control the situation. In a seminar for teaching assistants, I was

surprised to hear that parents often go to their office to complain about marks

and assignments their children have got. What I have seen and heard has left me

feeling uncomfortable. Unlike my parents allowing me to make mistakes in my life,

parents of today’s college students seem never to give their children a chance to

take charge.

2.2 Digging into detail

he needed and register by himself, and the experience would actually help him

grow into adulthood.

1. A:Unlike safe Chinese colleges and universities, American college campuses

have seen shootings with some frequency. It is pretty scary.

B:Yes, the news reports do give you such an impression. Every time there is

a shooting incident, people discuss the issue of gun control. Nonetheless, many

Americans still believe in the right to own a gun.

2. A:I’m shocked to see my final grade. They say that in the US, students can

talk to the professor and get the grade changed. Do you think I can do that?

B:If the recorded grade is wrong, you do have reason to be in disbelief and

should go to complain. And if you’re not satisfied with your grade, you should

also remember to negotiate your grade early, for example, right after

each assignment or quiz has been graded.

3. A:Professors are now judged by how many research papers they have

published. Do you think they will care about teaching any more?

B:A good question. This has become a real issue. Under the current

system, faculty members undertake a lot of/too much research work and focus

less on teaching. Some of them just muddle through classroom teaching.

4. A:Professors have office hours and expect students to come by. But how can

I make good use of the time when I go to talk to the professor?

7

B:I think you should get prepared with questions before you set foot in the

professor’s office. If you know what you’re asking, there is no doubt that the

professor will be very supportive as you’re obviously showing that you can take

charge of your learning.
