Volunteering at the Sunny Meadows Senior Medical Center

Hi there! My name is Emily and I'm a junior in high school.

Over the past year, I've been volunteering at a really cool place

called the Sunny Meadows Senior Medical Center. It's this big

building right near my school that provides medical care and

assisted living for older adults. When I first signed up to

volunteer there, I thought it would just be something to put on

my college applications. But it's turned into so much more than

that!

On my very first day, I was pretty nervous. I didn't really

know what to expect. All I knew was that I'd be helping out the

nurses and spending time with the residents. The nurse in charge,

Nurse Jackie, showed me around and made me feel right at

home. She introduced me to a few of the residents and it was

hard not to smile at how sweet and friendly they all were.

One lady named Mrs. Rodriguez immediately started telling

me about her grandkids and all the mischief they got into when

they were my age. Another resident, Mr. Taylor, insisted I call him

Frank and asked if I liked comic books as much as he did when he

was a teenager. I could tell right away that all the residents had

such big personalities and fascinating life stories. I was excited to

get to know them better.

My main job as a volunteer is to assist the nurses by running

little errands, keeping the residents company, and participating

in the recreational activities. On a typical day, I'll go around with

a nurse and help get residents situated for the day - making sure

they have water, their meals, their medications, that kind of thing.

We'll chat with them, fluff their pillows, and just do little things to

make them comfortable.

In the afternoons and evenings, there are always fun

activities going on that I get to join in. One day it might be bingo

or trivia games. Another day could be an exercise class where we

do gentle stretches and chair yoga. My favorite is when we have

live music performances! Local singers, musicians, and even high

school music groups will come put on little concerts. It's the

cutest thing seeing all the residents bop along to the tunes.

They've even taught me some dances from back in their day like

the Jitterbug!
