paperorcloth,removingallmarksthatmayhavebeenmadeby

ethestripin

6.3.2.1Asapracticalmanualprocedureforsurfaceprepa-

ration,placeasheetofthepaperonaflatsurface,moistenit

withkerosineorwashsolvent,andrubthestripagainstthe

paperwitharotarymotion,protectingthestripfromcontact

withthefingerswithanashlessfiatively,the

surfaceofthestripcanbepreparedbyuseofmotor-driven

machinesusingappropriategradesofdrypaperorcloth.

6.3.3FinalPreparation—Removeastripfromthewash

gitinthefingersprotectedwithashlessfilter

paper,polishfirsttheendsandthenthesideswiththe105-µm

(150-mesh)siliconcarbidegrainspickedupfromacleanglass

platewithapadofcotton(cottonwool)moistenedwithadrop

gorouslywithfreshpadsofcotton

(cottonwool)andsubsequentlyhandleonlywithstainlesssteel

forceps;donottouchwiththefinaviseand

polishthemainsurfaceswithsilicon-carbidegrainsonabsor-

he

directionofthelongaxisofthestrip,carryingthestroke

beyondtheendofthestripbeforereversingthedirection.

Cleanallmetaldustfromthestripbyrubbingvigorouslywith

cleanpadsofabsorbentcottonuntilafreshpadremains

estripisclean,immediatelyimmerseitin

thepreparedsample.

6.3.3.1Itisimportanttopolishthewholesurfaceofthestrip

dgesshow

wear(surfaceelliptical)theywilllikelyshowmorecorrosion
