2. Getting through four years of college is a challenge for anyone, but for kids like Caleb Simmons,
it seemed nearly impossible.
Caleb didn’t even get into the University of Texas at Dallas the first time he applied. Once he did get
in, though, his entire life seemed to collapse around him just as he was trying to find his footing at
school. When his family lost their house during his freshman year, Caleb found himself homeless.
“At some point, I couldn’t go to class. I really was about to just drop out,” he said. “We lost our
house. I had nowhere to stay. I had no car at the time.”
Finally, out of sheer desperation, Caleb turned to the school administration for help. That’s when he
met Joann Chapin, a student solutions specialist on campus who made it her mission to help the
young man find his footing. And on weekends and school breaks, Caleb spent his time with Joann
and her children, growing so close that they now consider one another family.
Four years after hitting rock bottom, Caleb not only graduated, but he was asked to deliver a speech
to his classmates at graduation! He used the opportunity to thank his new “mom”, Joann, who sat
front and center in his family section that day.
During Caleb’s graduation speech, he called upon those dark days early on to convey a simple
message to his peers: No matter how much poverty, or unfortunate circumstances a person can be
put in, they can still make a better life for themselves. Opportunities can happen if you go for them.
His next goal is to work for the college that helped him through his toughest times so that he can
encourage teens living in poverty to reach their goals, as he did.

3. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently declared children’s mental health is a national crisis.
In December 2021, Dr. Murthy issued a report to highlight the additional pressures the economic
depression had put on the country’s youth, and the urgent need to address this. The impact of this
crisis is far-reaching, and new research shows that it’s affecting parents’ well-being, plus their
ability to succeed at work and provide for their families.
“On Our Sleeves, a national movement that aims to break shame around children’s mental health,
surveyed more than 3,000 working parents across the US and found that 8 in 10 parents have been
very concerned about their child’s mental health and development or behavior in the past two years.
Children’s mental health concerns have been hiding in plain sight for many years, surrounded by
confusion and shame,” says Marti Bledsoe Post, the director of On Our Sleeves.
The survey found that 53% of working parents have missed work at least once per month to deal
with their children’s mental health. And 71% of parents said issues with their child’s mental or
emotional well-being made the stresses of work much more difficult to cope with.
“Employers need to know that many of their employees are struggling and it is impinging their work
as a result,” says Marti. “Our mission with On Our Sleeves is to provide every family in America
access to free, evidence-based educational resources. We see this study as incredibly important in
starting the conversation and providing solutions for working families.”
As Marti points out, for some parents, taking a child to weekly therapy (
心理治疗
) appointments
and attending meetings at school consume a lot of time. These parents should be helped.

A. Brusatte said that becoming smaller was “a common way that mammals deal with climate
change”. He added, “That’s not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to
be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures rise pretty quickly. Which does raise the
question: If temperatures do rise really quickly, might humans become shorter, might humans get
smaller? And I think that’s certainly reasonable.”
B. Lister doubts that humans will be shorter as the climate heats. “We are not really controlled by
natural selection,” he said. “If that was going to happen, you’d need to find large people dying
before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today’s world.
We wear clothes, we have got heating, we have got air conditioning if it is too hot.”
C. “The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals (
哺乳动物
) with
smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures,” a leading fossil expert has
said. Prof Steve Brusatte, a professor at the University of Edinburgh also notes that animals in
warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas.
D. Another study has showed that researchers studying human remains over the past million years
have also suggested that temperature is a major predictor of body size change, while scientists
studying red deer have said that warmer winters in northern Europe and Scandinavia may lead to the
body size of these animals becoming smaller.
E. However, not all experts agree that rising temperatures cause mammals to shrink. Prof Adrian
Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human
remains study is weak, while the strong relationship between temperature and mammal body size
may often be down to the availability of food and resources.
5. Online banking and online shopping have been popular these years. 1 But they have also created
an opportunity for scammers (
骗子
) to try to steal people’s money online.
The most common tricks include email, phone call and short message service (SMS) scams that trick
someone into handing over banking and other personal details. Scammers can also use spiteful (
恶意
的
) software to infect a computer and steal the owner’s data. 2 And teams of experts work around
the clock to monitor accounts. But it’s important that you also take steps to protect yourself to stay
safe online.
There are unexpected calls where the callers claim to be from an organization and offer to help with
a computer issue. They request “remote access” to your computer and then attempt to gain access to
your personal accounts. Sometimes they ask for your information, such as banking details. 3
Email scams can be well-designed and hard to spot. 4 You might then be asked to enter your
banking details into a fake site, or your computer or device could be infected with spiteful software.
Therefore, don’t click on links from unknown or unexpected emails, and don’t open attachments.
5 Install the latest antivirus software on your device. Be careful not to share personal information
online and not accept friend requests from strangers. If you do receive a strange call, chat to your
family members and tell them what’s going on.
A
.
Your computer has been attacked.
B
.
They offer people lots of convenience.
